The Primary School curriculum (Reception through Year 6) follows an English language medium programme using the Primary Years Programme (PYP) under the auspices of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It became an authorized PYP school in 2007. The aim of the Primary Years Programme is to produce students who fit a clearly defined student profile comprised of the following learner attributes: Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Caring, Open-minded, Well balanced and Reflective. Classroom activities are designed with the above learning outcomes in mind. Single subject specialist work with primary students in the area of Information and Communication Technology, French (Reception – Year 5), Spanish (Year 6), Physical Education and Art (Year 1-6). There is a comprehensive internal system for monitoring individual progress with external checks, such as the National Foundation of Educational Research (N.F.E.R.) multi-skills mathematics and language tests administered at appropriate year levels. Specialists include English as a Second Language Teachers, and Learning Support Teachers for children with specific educational needs.
The Secondary School starts with the International Middle Years Curriculum Year 7 in 2016. This will roll up into Years 8 in 2017 and Year 9 in 2018 .
The U.K. based International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a two-year curriculum offered for Years 10 & 11. IGCSE courses currently on offer include: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Spanish, Computer Science, English Literature, Geography, History, Economics, Music, Drama, and Art.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma
Programme, which is arguably the best college preparatory programme in the
world, has been in place at ISL since 1996. This two-year course forms the
basis of study in IBDP1 and IBDP2 Programme (Years 12-13).
The following IB courses are
currently offered at both Standard Level and Higher Level: English, French B,
Spanish B, Geography, History, Business and Management, Economics, Psychology (online), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Visual Arts, Theatre
Arts, and Computer Science.
Courses offered at
Standard Level only are: Spanish ab initio, SL Mathematics, and Maths Studies.
ISL is also a permanent test centre for the American Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SATs) and for the South African university entrance tests.
